Monthly Meeting - December 2007

As expected, we had a most crowded attendance in our monthly meeting last night. Most members came trying to catch our Master Tang's presentation on Photoshop Techniques.

Master Tang is so experienced in this key photo editing tool and so professional in public address that his knowledgeable and humorous speech attracted all participants from the beginning to the end. The meeting lasted two hours and 40 min.

We thank Master Tang and salute with a 90 degree bow here!

In order to improve the situation, the President has decided to move the monthly location to another bigger room starting next month, the Toastmaster Room, at the center of the same building (the aisle to the wash room.)

2008 is still two weeks away, 2008 BOD has be warm up to serve the team. Both our 2008 VPs Windus and Dave brought a big basket of hot "spring rolls" and a dish of home made chocolate pecan nut cake, respectively, to our monthly meeting last night to entertain all attendance. We give you two a big hug! Thank Woindus and Dave!

We welcome our visitors/new members Tao An, Wu Zu Chiu, Wen Chen Chiu, and Bernadette Wang last night in our monthly meeting! We are looking for more new friends to join us in 2008. We have organized an ever stronger BOD to serve all. NTAPA is heading a prosperous future. Cheer !!!

General:

We had another “full house” in Wednesday’s monthly meeting. Guess what? All of our new and past Presidents were present. They were April, David, Walt, Li, and Pauline. This happens only once every ten years. :)

The President opened the meeting with a warm welcome to new comers and guests. Among all, Sujie Tong is one of the most active and aggressive ladies. She newly bought a Canon D40, and made her Alaska trip with Dr. Zeng two weeks ago, and went to Whiterock Lake with us yesterday. Welcome, Sujie!

There were so many members and visitors crowding in the meeting room that laughter and joyful atmosphere were accompanying us throughout the meeting. Discussion and photo sharing were so excited that we ran out of time. The President finally had to scarify the last item – Presentation on Basic Management of Digital Images, and jumped to the end at around 10:00 PM. :)

Photo Sharing:

Both Dr. Zeng and Dr. Lai shared the works of their recent Alaska photo trips in the meeting. Dr. Zeng gave an interesting and attractive story while showing his beautiful photos.

Rick’s photography skill has shown a tremendous improvement since he bought the Canon D30 gear. He shared with us a beautiful Whiterock Lake sun raising photo and several other stage portraits, which characterized with professional-like standard.

David also shared his Diabolo Dance stage pictures, which emphasized in low light skills. As experienced as he is, David did an excellent job on this assignment. We are looking for a second in-house or under-the-sun-light portrait training class from David next year.

Walt also presented a few of his recent wonderful works in the same Diabolo Dance performance evening. Walt is another experienced master of our Association, especially good at video shooting and editing. Next time, if your son or daughter or friend gets married, don’t forget ask for his help. He can give you a member discount, I believe. :)

Lei Zhou has been a unique birds photographing expert in our Association. He shared with us some new bird pictures, clear and beautiful and catching at the right time. We have to include at least one bird photo trip with him next year.

Caddo Lake Trip:

After discussion, we will have more than 10 people joining the Caddo Lake trip on 11/3. For those show interested to go, please send me an email immediately with number of people will go with you. We need the final headcount for hotel/cabin reservation in advance.

The names listed below are initially signed for the trip:

Joyce Wang
Rick Pang
Howard Lie
Windus Wong
David Hsu
Fang-Li Hsu
Richard and Sally Chen
Pauline Chen
Greg Hoh

Please confirm the number of people to go at your earliest possible time. Thank you!

If you chage mind and want to cancel or join us, please also let me know as soon as possible. We run out of time already.

Yearend Party:

Because of schedule conflict, our yearend party has been moved to Friday, 12/21. We welcome all members, photography friends, and member families to join us to celebrate our outstanding harvest in 2007 under the presidency of Pauline Chen.

Autumn Photo Contest:

The President repeatedly announced the regulations and rules of the autumn photo contest. Basically it is about the same as the first contest of the year. Each one can turn in unlimited photos for competition, members are free; non-members, $3 for each photo. The deadline is 11/15. The place to turn your photos is Walt Hsu’s store:

There is one thing of vital importance. We welcome our distinguished members and/or outside guests to make donations of cash or gifts for the contest. General:

Meeting started on time. The President first expressed our warm welcome to the new members, and had them, one by one, make brief self introduction.

Among them, Dave Tyler is an experienced photographer. Hope he can help us in many ways in future.

Balloon Festival:

Howard prepared the 3-day event schedules for us. The majority interested in joining the fun. Those who prepare to go will get together at the Plano DART Station at Parker Road and K Ave early Saturday morning (9/29). We will take the first Bus to the Balloon gate together.

The bus is free. The ticket is $5 for one entrance and $8 for double entrances. Howard suggested you buy the double entrance ticket so that you can go in the morning and then, again, in the late afternoon, as the golden time to shoot the balloon games is early in the morning and late in the afternoon. During 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, you can go to the Arboretum to visit the Fine Art Fair and Dr. Lai’s booth, where you can also take flower pictures.

A few of us will go Friday afternoon and/or Sunday morning because of schedule conflicts.

Fine Art Fair at Dallas Arboretum:

Dr. Lai will have his art booth (No. 61) on both 9/22 (Saturday) and 9/23 (Sunday) inside the garden. He is expecting your presence to visit his exhibition. Pauline, Windus and Greg will be there Saturday. Pauline will buy an annual pass for NTAPA. Windus is a TIer and using his TI badge he can take 5 friends with him free in this particular day.

So if you go by yourself, call either one of them at the gate, they will come out to take you in free.

Caddo Lake Trip:

We did not make it in May; we will try to make it happen in late October or early November. Some like to spend a night over the lake so that can take the evening and the morning pictures. Those want to go and come back in the same day can do so, too! Richard is helping to survey hotel prices and related info.

Autumn Photo Contest:

The cutoff date is 10/30. The President urges us to turn in photos now. The game is about the same as our first photo contest. The prices may vary a little bit. Details will be announced in a later date.

Yearend Party and Election:

It will be held in the DFW Technology Activity Center. Due to the busy schedules in December, our tentative date 12/15 may change. Will announce when closer.

Photoshop for Portrait:

David Hsu is still in Taiwan; Walt Hsu gave a 20-minute real time demonstration in the meeting. Everyone was interested. Self practice at home is needed after viewing the demo, or you will soon forget everything.

Photo Sharing:

Li Su, Yingbi Wan, Richard Chen, Walt Hsu, Greg Hoh shared their photos in the meeting. Some discussions of an educational nature in the meeting have led to solutions for future improvements. That’s good point.

Dave Tyler has brought a lot of his works, in print-out 11’ x 8’ hard copies, to share with all. They are all very beautiful photos.

Invited by the local government, Dennis Chin and Walt Hsu had a very special photography tour to the Glacier National Park in Montana State early this month. They spent 9 days there, circling the park several times, searching each and every corner, lake, mountain, rock and tree, to look for their dreams.

We all viewed part of their work in the farewell party last Saturday night (8/11/2007). We will watch more in Walt's photo links.

The following are three special reports from TVBS (sorry, there are in Chinese), tracking the stories back to the tens of thousands disappearing glaciers...

The first story is all about Dennis Chin

TVBS News)

TVBS News)

TVBS News)

NTAPA - A Dynamic Group

Picture taken by gh on 7/8 Canon PowerShot 610; 1/50 sec F 4.5 ISO 400 manual

NTAPA is a gathering of a group of restless photo lovers. On top of the Association’s monthly schedules, members also arrange their own personal programs.

A quick review of the past 6 months and near future activities:

1. Dr. Lai and Master Chin had two joined winter photo trips to Northern states of the county in February.

2. Master April Kao had her Tibet photo exhibition in Denison in March.

3. JJ Lin led a team of 10 toured Southwest China in March and April.

4. Master Chin had his personal photo exhibition in Taipei in early May.

5. Master April Kao had a South Chin photo tour with friends in May

6. Walt Hsu made at least two photo trips to Taiwan during April and June.

7. Dr. Lai and Richardson Chen had a Northwest coast photo tour in June.

8. JJ had another China tour to Sinkiang and just came back not too long ago.

9. Lin went to North CA for seashore scenic shooting and old painting class.

10. Master Chin and Walt Hsu are still in Montana for ranch photo and video shooting now.

11. Believe or not, after the group downtown building photographying tour on 7/7, Dr. Lai and I kept going the same place for the rest 5 days. Last time with Ming Zing 3 persons, both Dr. Lai and Ming almost caught very HUGE fish in the Trinity River while we were waiting for the sunset and passing by airplanes. The fish were too heavy and strong that their threads were always broken when pulling almost to the bank. Exciting!

12. On August 3, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Chen will start a 10,000+ mile photo trip to Alaska by driving! Anyone interested to join them?

13. Dr. Lai will also fly to Alaska in September for photographing aurora borealis.

14. Ming Zing will explorer the arctic in September or later.

15. You may plan something at this moment, too!

General:

[06/20/2007] Because of doing the People's Choice for the photo contest, the Meeting was held in the Activity Center of DFW Technology this evening. It was another great meeting. We had more than 20 members and visitors present, including some senior members such as Denis Chin, April Kao, Fulchu Li, David Hsu, Walt Hsu and Li Su, etc.

As usual, the meeting was chaired by the President, Pauline Chen. Except some photo sharing, our Chin Master gave a presentation of his recent trips to Taiwan and Montana with 86 photos of the huge Montana ranches taken last month. His half century long photography experience has explored a different angle of viewing the art of the light and image arrangements.

Congratulations! David Hsu, one of our pioneers of NTAPA, has been elected as the 2007-2008 President of NTCCTCC. He just came back from Mexico City one day ago and will fly to LA tomorrow.

Being a true photography lover, David was also present in the meeting despite his tight schedules. He gave us a vivid and interesting presentation, sharing his experience and technologies on some of his bluebonnet trip photos.

One of the excited news is that David will be leading our next month activity, live model shooting class. In order to give plenty of time to study this first-time-in-life event (to most of the members,) the President has accounted that our next monthly meeting will be shifted from the usual Wednesday evening to Saturday afternoon. Please be aware that this is only a one time change.

Both advanced and beginner levels together, we have received more than 100 pictures entering for our 2007 First Photo Contest. All the pictures were displayed in the Activity Center for People’s Choice during the meeting. According to some senior members, the standard of the photos submitted, in general, is getting higher than it used to be. This means that the quality and techniques of the general NTAPA members are improving. Cheers!

Thanks to Walt Hsu, who collected, prepared and numbered each photo for the activity. For your info, the official judge will be held on 6/30 by our judging team. The results will be announced on 7/6, and of most importance, do come on 7/7 to our certificates and prizes for the winners’ party at this same location.

Finally we have the chance to enjoy Dr. Lai's new photographs taken during recent several trips to Ennis, Terrell, Tylar and Richardson Breckinridge Park. He put all his recent pictures into a new album regardless of time and places taken.

Being a part-time pro photographer, each piece of his works has been carefully impregnated the mind with poetic grace.

When you watch them, you seem hearing that he is reading a poem.
